Mandatory Firearms Practice

1.0 Refer to the Policy on the Use of Force and the Policy on the Acquisition and Reporting of Agency Firearms.
Preamble
Following the successful completion of initial CBSA duty firearms training, officers will be required to attend two live-fire firearms practices per year. In the first year, officers will be required to attend two structured practices supervised by CBSA-approved firearms trainers. After the first year, officers will be required to attend two scheduled practice sessions per year with a minimum of one CBSA-approved firearms trainer in attendance.
General
Follow these procedures regarding mandatory firearms practice.
Managers
2.0 Ensure that officers are scheduled for their first firearms practice approximately four months following their last certification or re-certification and their second approximately eight months following their last certification or re-certification.
2.1 Ensure that the first two firearms practices the officer attends are structured and supervised by CBSA-approved firearms trainers.
2.2 Ensure that at least one CBSA-approved firearms trainer is present at all scheduled practice sessions following an officer’s two structured practices.
2.3 Ensure that officers are provided with a sufficient quantity of training ammunition and targets for practice (minimum 150 rounds of ammunition).
2.4 Ensure that log records are kept and maintained for all training ammunition issued to officers.
CBSA Officers
3.0 Advise your manager when you are required to schedule firearms practice.
3.1 Attend a CBSA-approved firing range.
3.1.1 Ensure that safe handling procedures are followed at all times.
3.2 Inform your manager and/or use of force trainer if you experience difficulties and request additional or remedial practice.
3.3 Clean your duty firearm and reload it with duty ammunition.
3.4 Return any unused ammunition to your manager or issuing office.
